Eight months after Accountability Lab began gathering data following the US government’s aid freeze, responses are reflecting more detailed impacts on the governance and anti-corruption space.
The financial runways of organizations remain concerning, with 20% of respondents saying they have one month of financial resources left. Between surveys three and four, the number of organisations reporting being at risk of closure increased from 28% to 38%. Across all three surveys, most respondents who disclosed this information said more than half of their budgets had been impacted.
Accountability Lab is working with Humentum and Global Voices on a series of surveys assessing the financial and programming impact of development finance disruptions. These efforts are aimed at informing the actions of partners and donors mobilizing resources, information, and tools to try to assist organizations and people in need. These are the results of a relaunched survey in October to gather comparative results of the kind of steps needed to support a fast-shifting development landscape.
In terms of job losses, 19% of respondents said they lost between 70% and 100% of staff. Eleven percent of respondents laid off between 30% and 50% of employees. The thematic areas most affected include governance, health, gender, anti-corruption, human rights, poverty, youth, climate, education, and economic development.
Respondents shared that philanthropic funding has fallen by 21% this year, followed by multilateral funding (20%), bilateral support (19%) and private donations (18%). Find more details in this report.
During a period in which organizations have had to make difficult decisions about closing their doors, Accountability Lab has partnered with Development Gateway: An IREX Venture to develop and launch a partnership-matching service for organizations, offering a viable path for many organizations to sustain their impact amid unprecedented challenges. Contact Civic Strength Partners to hear about the kinds of pro bono services on offer.
About the data:
In keeping with our commitment to preserve privacy, minimize potential harms, and follow responsible data principles, responses were de-identified before analysis and publication. Basic data cleaning processes were also applied.
